Police in southern Spain have arrested a 25-year-old man after he allegedly killed both of his parents during a sudden and violent shooting at their home on Monday night. He surrendered.
The gunfire broke out around 23:00 in the small town of El Ejido, which sits near Almería and is widely known across Europe for its massive greenhouse farming industry. It was late.
Officers say four other people were hit during the attack and they remain in a serious condition at a regional hospital after being rushed into emergency care today. Two are infants.
One victim is believed to be the suspect's own seven-month-old son, according to various reports currently circulating through several local news outlets and radio stations in the Almería region. It is a tragedy.
And an 18-month-old baby was also wounded along with a 60-year-old man who was reportedly present when the gunman first opened fire on his family inside the property. They are in surgery.
The suspect was briefly on the run after the killings but walked into a local police station to surrender to officers in the early hours of Tuesday morning. He is in jail.
Now the Guardia Civil is investigating the scene to establish a motive for why the young man suddenly turned on his own family members with such lethal force. No names are public.
But mass shootings are rare in Spain, as data shows only four such crimes were recorded in the country between the years 2000 and the end of last year. The town is reeling.
